Philips HQ8150 Philishave Speed XL Mains/Rechargeable Rotary Shaver Reviews

It was 3 days before I went on holiday and my old Philishave finally died. (The on/off button broke). So after many years of good service I had to make a quick purchase decision and plucked for this one. Pleased I am.

The design is just an evolution of the old Quadra Philishave which you can still buy. Except for the non-rechargeable one, it is the bottom of the range shaver using the Speed XL blades. It looks slicker than my old shaver. The on/off button looks more solid and the shaver on the whole is quieter.

Unlike my old shaver this thing comes with a little docking station that you place it on for easy charging. However when you are on holiday and space is at a premium you can charge it by plugging it straight into the lead. As it happens I did not need to charge it over the 2 week holiday, using it every day. It also comes with a shaped padded case which helps protect it from knocks and bangs. It is easy to clean; you just run it under a hot tap.

I can't review the trimmer bit. I have never used it. The shave is good. I don't know how much difference the extra 50% shaving surface makes. What I do know is that it takes about the same amount of time to shave, but seems less likely to catch or nick the skin. It also copes better when you go without shaving for a few days and your stubble is turning into beard.

I would recommend this shaver to anyone that is in the market for one. I expect that just like my old shaver this will save me a fortune in disposable blades over its years of use.

I've had this shaver for 2 months now and I have to say I would Recommend it to all.
This shaver looks and feel great in your hand. It's not heavy and the blue light around the on/off button makes it look very smart. Very well built I feel this could last as long as my last Phillips which I had for over 15 years.
I'm most impressed with the charge time, I shave everyday and I've only just charged it agian for the third time WOW. It's also easy to clean and maintain.
Most importantly the shave quality is very good. It's not going to shave as close as a razor so don't expect it too but what you can expect is a good quick close shave with little fuss & irritation.

If I would to be critical of anything it would be that yes sometimes it does miss a longer or tuff hair on my neck so I have to go over the same area a few times but it does the job in the end and to be ultra critical when it's in it's stand you can't just pick it up out of it, you have to use two hands - one to hold the stand down and the other lift the shaver, I find this slightly anoying.

Before I bought this shaver I did some research and checked it againt other models and I'm sure I made the right choice. So this Shaver does not have a "Multi-purpose LED display" or a "Replacement head/cleaning indicator" but I can press a button and it opens up so I can see if it needs cleaning I don't need a light to tell me this and I can tell if it needs replacement heads because it stops cutting closely oh and one more thing, you can tell if the battery is running low because it starts to slow down and with it's 3 minutes quick charge you'll never be stuck with a dead shaver.
There are simular more expensive models out there but why bother, they will do the same job but cost you more!

Finally I would rate this shaver 4.5/5

I suppose that different electric shavers work best for different people but this one has certainly not let me down. The closeness of the shave is good and depends on how much time you use it for. Although it isn't a close as a wet shave is it is excellent for when you don't have much time - I find 90 seconds is sufficient most mornings, expecially when in a rush. Overall I'd rate the closeness of the shave at 7/10.

When cleaning the shaver, all you have to do is flip open the top and rinse with hot water. The internals are sealed so the water will drip through the shaver and out the bottom (this is the recommended cleaning method). I've been using mine for about 10 months now and the blades are still sharp and effective.

The battery life is excellent. I find I only have to charge mine every 6 weeks using it every day. The shaver can be charged in the included base via mains connection and will charge fully in a few hours (quick charge available). A red light will flash when the shaver is in use (and for a few seconds after you switch it off) to show you that the battery is low.

It looks great and comes with a handy travel case and brush and can be stored in the bag or on the charge stand. It's not that quiet when in use but this isn't a problem and the noise level isn't too loud. The only problem I have with this is that a 2 pin plug adapter is not included so if you want to charge it via a standard 3 pin socket you will need to get one.

I haven't had any problems with it so far and expect to continue using it for a few years. £80 is a fair price for this but I bought it for around £69 so I would recommend it if the price goes down again.
